漸教

(漸教, 渐教)

The gradual method of teaching by beginning with the Hīnayāna and proceeding to the Mahāyāna, in contrast with [lang id =1028]頓教 q.v. the immediate teaching of the Mahāyāna doctrine, or of any truth directly; e.g. the Huayan school considers the <Huayan sūtra> as the immediate or direct teaching, and the <Lotus Sūtra> as both gradual and direct; Tiantai considers the Lotus direct and complete; but there are other definitions.

◆漸教者， 謂約漸悟之機， 大由小起， 所設具有三乘之教也。 （三乘者， 聲聞乘、 緣覺乘、 菩薩乘也。 ） ◆謂始自鹿苑， 終於雙樹， 所說之經， 從小至大， 故名漸教。 ◆謂佛說法， 始自鹿苑， 終至雙樹， 從小至大， 是名漸教。 ◆漸即漸次， 有漸初、 漸中、 漸末之不同， 謂如來初於鹿苑， 破斥邪法， 建立正教， 專為二乘， 此名漸初， 即阿含經也。 次於方等會上， 彈斥二乘小機， 令其歸向大法， 此名漸中， 即淨名等經也。 後於般若會上， 廣談空慧之法， 淘汰二乘執小之情， 會一切法皆歸大乘， 此名漸末， 即般若經也。 如是自淺至深， 次第而進， 故名漸教。 （二乘者， 聲聞乘、 緣覺乘也。 ）
